My name is Hairul, but you can call me Hai or Hi. I am a student in UMS currently doing my MSc in Marine Mammals in specific Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, (Sousa chinensis). Frankly, I never knew that one day I will continue my studies in this field, my first thought was, is there any dolphins in Malaysia...? Hmm... still living in my own space. Then, one day, I send an e-mail to Dr Saifullah whom used to be one my lecturer back in my degree years. I just wanted to know if there is any work opportunity, then he offered to do marine mammals research.
At first, there was a hesitation, but when I reviewed several papers regarding the mammal, I got interested to know more. And I said yes. My first year was tough, coz I have to support my education expenses by myself, but still, I was lucky enough, there was PTPTN. My fees covered. What a relief. Dr Saiful hired me as an enumerator for almost a year so that I can support my living in K. Kinabalu. Lucky, later, I was pointed as one of his Research Officer for his Grant from MOSTI. Things just got even better then. I managed to do my research according to my milestone. Studying the dolphins population for a year, required me to be patient and organized. Everything must be done according to plan and with systems. Don't work to hard but smart. Now I truly understand that phrase...
You know something, even though I did almost the same thing when I went out for survey which sometimes boring, because you just observed the dolphins from far and the most frustration part will be when they were doing the same thing in every survey, still, I can see them in the most positive way. They just swam, snorkeled, and sometimes leaped out from the water which was so cool.
I know, it may not sound significant, but i felt calm whenever I see them in the sea, in my photo album, or even in TV. I think I have fallen in love with my field, and I hope I can continue doing more on humpback dolphins. I told myself this 'Life may not be according to my plan, but there things that can be worked out the way I want it to be', therefore I will take my steps one by one heading to the goal.
Right now, I am doing my analysis for my research, and I hope I can make it by time. I want to make it, coz at this point, I want to finish what I have started and begin a new journey in life. Keep on walking Hai, you don't have to run, just keep walking, with a constant pace, you will reach your destination, in matter of time.
